A day in
the life of
a stylist
a flatlay
'Flowers and my fave things' was the theme for this
sunny days photoshoot. I had two different style of
flowers for this shoot, some bright pink artificial ones
as well as some natural pod looking branches.
I selected items that i thought would compliment these
flowers in a relaxed but exciting way.
I found a salt lamp, sunglasses, a flared sleeved top, a
Buddha statue and some art work and paper. I positioned
myself right next to the huge windows in order for as
much natural light to flood in as possible.
I tried using hard and soft backgrounds, first a dark
wooden board and then some fabric that had been
painted.
As the shoot went on the sun started getting lower in the
sky meaning these beautiful shadows were being created.
I tried holding the plants up so only their shadow was
seen instead of having the positioned in the actual frame.
I played around with composition quite a bit in this shoot,
as my objects where all quite different shapes I needed to
try lots of different options to see what worked best. In the
images bellow (bottom middle) you can see i positioned
the plant the its leaves were taking up half of the shot and
I really loved the outcome.
In the bathroom I found this strip LED lighting on a steel beam which I thought would be super cool to drape some props over. I tried putting lots of props in with the LED light but I worked out less items looked better in this shot.
This shoot was so much fun and I ended up loving and using majority of the photos I took that day. I think natural lighting for flat lays works the best and I recommend using shadows in your favour rather than trying to get rid of them as I loved how these turned out!
